SEAFN celebrates the upholding of birthright citizenship and the Supreme Court’s 6-3 majority decision in the Trump v. Barbara case. After a long road of legal challenges, the Supreme Court has affirmed the basic principle that the president cannot rewrite the Constitution with a stroke of a pen. The decision to protect this right under the 14th Amendment alleviates some of the stress our immigrant and refugee communities are facing. Many have fled violence in search of safety, and birthright citizenship guarantees that protection for future generations.
We remain vigilant as the Trump sdministration continues eroding our constitutional rights and sowing chaos and fear in our communities. We will keep fighting to love and protect our communities, building on the legacy of so many generations of civil rights organizers and leaders before us.
